RECONCILIATION This sermon series defines the DNA of Riviera Church.

But we should never rest on our laurels as these issues are the issues of our day and the ones to which we are called as a Matthew 25 Church – by building a vital congregation who is working towards dismantling structural racism and eradicating systemic poverty.

CALL TO WORSHIP                                                    Barbara Overton

We are here because we have heard the call of Jesus in our lives. We are here to challenge and support one another to rise up and follow. We are here because we want to be God’s people.

We want to learn more about what it means to be the people of God.

We come, seeking to be moved, changed, and made whole by the Spirit of the living God.

Let us open our hearts to the moving of the Spirit. Let us worship God!

CALL TO CONFESSION                             Nancy Stults, Kathy Stults, Karen Moyer, and Janelle Stults

Let us confess our sins to the One who gives life eternally.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION unison prayer

Creative and loving God, you have searched us and known us

and all that we are is open to you. We confess we have sinned: we have put up walls between ourselves and you, closing our hearts to your gifts. We have failed to respect and honor the gifts you have given us in creation, earth and all living things. We squander the inheritance of generations to come.

We have sinned against each other: we have put up walls between ourselves and our neighbors, giving in to fear, ignorance, and arrogance. We are stained by the sin of racism and fail to respect the gifts of all your peoples.

We have used our power to dominate and our weakness to manipulate; we have evaded responsibility and failed to confront evil; we have trusted false gods and listened to their promises; we have denied dignity to ourselves and each other; we have fallen into deep despair. In our despair we have forgotten you, and have gone away from your path.

Forgive us for what we have done to hurt others and the ways we have hurt the earth. Give us your blessing and help. Let us walk in your great love; through the great peacemaker, your son, Jesus Christ.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Siblings in Christ hear the good news. We did not receive the spirit of slavery, but rather the spirit of adoption. Your guilt has departed: your sin is blotted out, for you are God’s beloved children – forgiven, loved, and free. May God’s peace be with you. Amen.

CHILDREN’S SERMON                                                       Anna Rosas

CHILDREN’S SONG

    • Hymn 399: Alleluia, Alleluia, Give Thanks

THE WORD

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION                                      Barbara Overton

In every age, you give us prophets, holy God, to cry out for justice and mercy. Open our ears to hear them, and to understand that the truth they speak is your way, lest we support injustice and seek to secure our own well-being. Give prophets the fire of your word but give them love as well. Though they are called to speak in your name, help them to never forget that they stand with us before you, and as disciples follow your Word. Amen.

CHORAL ANTHEM

    • Hymn #1:  Holy Holy Holy

SCRIPTURE LESSON                                                  Barbara Overton

Luke 4:14-19

14 Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. 15 He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.

16 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.  He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

SERMON                        The Rev. Martha M. Shiverick

    • ‘The Prophetic Community Boldly Proclaims the Mandate of the Gospel’

THE CONFESSION OF 1967             Nancy Stults, Kathy Stults, and Karen Moyer

9.20 God the Holy Spirit fulfills the work of reconciliation in human life. The Holy Spirit creates and renews the church as the community in which people are reconciled to God and to one another. The Spirit enables people to receive forgiveness as they forgive one another and to enjoy the peace of God as they make peace among themselves. In spite of their sin, the Spirit gives people power to become representatives of Jesus Christ and his gospel of reconciliation to all.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD’S PRAYER       Michele Ready

O God, you love justice and you establish peace on earth. We bring before you the disunity of today’s world: the absurd violence, and the many wars, which are breaking the courage of peoples of the world; militarism and the armaments race, which are threatening life on the planet; human greed and injustice, which breed hatred and strife. Send your Spirit to renew the face of the earth; teach us to be compassionate toward the whole human family; strengthen the will of all those who fight for justice and peace

and give us that peace which the world cannot give. We pray all this through Jesus Christ who also taught us when we prayed to pray in this manner:

Our Creator, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kin-dom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.

For the kin-dom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever.

Amen.
