CHIMING OF THE HOUR & WELCOMING THE LIGHT

WELCOME Rev. Martha M. Shiverick

CALL TO WORSHIP Janet Peterson

One: God calls us this day to a life of joy.

All: With God, joy cracks through the bonds of despair.

One: With God, joy bursts forth from moments of quiet pleasure.

All: With God, joy gilds the edges of even ordinary days.

One: This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Let us worship God!

CALL TO CONFESSION Kyle Dettloff

The Scriptures are shot through with stories of people just like us:

Men who grieved, women who questioned, siblings who did not get along, parents who chose favorites. God’s word of grace is meant for people just like us. There is no need for pretense as we go to God in prayer:

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

We confess that we have failed to concentrate on you. Our attention has wandered from you. Our hearts and minds withdraw from you.

We confess that our own concerns have usually taken priority over the needs of others. Our comforts have seemed more important than another’s poverty. Our difficulties have seemed more significant than the tragedies of others.

We confess that we have forgotten that we are created in your image. We ask that you help us to make loving others, loving ourselves, and loving you our goals.

Forgive us, mend us, redirect us, our creator and our God. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone in Christ is of the new creation. Old things have passed away and all things are new. Friends, believe the Good News of the Gospel: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven and restored to new life.

THE RESPONSE

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE  Jackie Junco and Juliana Orozco

Oh God, you created all people in your image.

We thank you for the astonishing variety of races and cultures in this world. Enrich our lives by ever-widening circles of friendship, and show us your presence in those who differ most from us, until our knowledge of your love is made perfect in our love for all your children.

Oh God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your son.

Look with compassion on the whole human family,

take away the arrogance and hatred that infects our hearts,

break down the walls that separate us,

unite us in bonds of love, and, through our struggle and confusion,

work to accomplish your purposes on earth;

that, in your good time, all nations and peoples may live in harmony.

We pray all this in Christ’s name who also taught us to pray in this manner:

For the Lord’s Prayer we appreciate the diverse traditions and backgrounds that make up the Riviera family of faith, and encourage you to use whatever words for this prayer are meaningful for you.

THE LORD’S PRAYER unison

Our Creator in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
