GATHERING
OPENING HYMN –
CHIMING OF THE HOUR and WELCOMING THE LIGHT
GREETINGS – Rev. Martha M. Shiverick
CALL TO WORSHIP — Doreen Ruggiero
One: From the midst of our real lives with their very real problems,
All: We come to seek courage and strength from the presence of God and the support of one another.
One: As persons who love imperfectly and are loved imperfectly,
All: We come to be renewed by the perfect love of God, proclaimed in the community of love and faith.
One: As persons who never really live up to the high calling of Jesus Christ,
All: We come to be encouraged to do our best for one more week.
Let us worship, with hearts open to the love of God, with hands outstretched to one another, and with whole selves willing to accept the cost and joy of being Christ’s disciples. Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION — Karen Collier
The One who pardons, heals, and strengthens all who repent calls us to name our failings and our hopes. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and one another.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION unison
God of all creation, Ruler of all peoples, you know us completely, how mean we are and how good we are. We humbly confess the mistakes we have made and the good we have neglected, the promises we have broken and the duties we have refused. Let the power and joy of your love become a mighty force in our lives. Help us to develop the good that is in us, and not be afraid to use it. Fortify our decision to live with honesty, integrity, joy, and unselfishness, through the grace of Jesus Christ. Amen.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
The God who made you and who knows your every thought hears you now and forgives you all your sin. You have been redeemed through Jesus Christ, God’s Son, our Savior, who is Alpha and Omega, all in all.

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION — Doreen Ruggiero

SCRIPTURE — Dr. Walter Busse

- Mark 1:21-28
21 They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. 22 They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, 24 and he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy
One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another,
“What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He[a] commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD’S PRAYER — Barbara Overton
In response to God’s infinite love and boundless grace we rejoice to give thanks at all times and in all places, to the one who created order out of chaos, who penetrated the night of sin with the light of the world, and whose light cannot be overcome by human resistance. We thank you, God, living Spirit, for sending us a star to guide the wise to Christ. We thank you that Christ identified with sinners, preached good news to the poor, proclaimed release of those shackled by ignorance, prejudice, and injustice. We bless you for the gifts you have lavishly given us:
for new definitions of power and wisdom, for disarming principalities and powers,
for removing estrangement and sin,
for inviting all to faithful discipleship,
for promising courage in the struggle for justice and peace,
for being with us in our struggles, our sicknesses, and our loneliness, and for inviting us to dwell in your presence forever.
We pray all this in Christ’s name who taught us to pray in this manner:
For the Lord’s Prayer we appreciate the diverse traditions and backgrounds that make up the Riviera family of faith and encourage you to use whatever words for this prayer are meaningful for you.
Our Creator, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread. Forgive our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

CALL TO OFFERING

Amen.
