GATHERING

OPENING HYMN –

CHIMING OF THE HOUR and WELCOMING THE LIGHT

GREETINGS – Rev. Martha M. Shiverick

CALL TO WORSHIP – Lexi

Have we not known? have we not heard?
Has it not been told to us since the beginning?
Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.
Let us worship God!

CALL TO CONFESSION – Jackie

We fool ourselves if we think
that our ways are hidden from God.
Therefore let us confess our sin,
trusting in the mercy of God, our Maker.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (from Psalm 145)

God, you are everlasting,
the creator of all that is.
Your understanding is beyond measure.
We confess to you that we have
sinned against you and our neighbors.
In your compassion, forgive us,
for we place our hope in your steadfast love.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

This is the good news of Jesus Christ.
We can stand before God, not through our own goodness,
but through God’s great kindness to us.
Rejoice and be glad, for God comes to you!

CHILDREN’S SERMON – Anna Rosas and Rev. Rosemary Noga Welton

CHILDREN’S HYMN

THE WORD

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION – Lexi

Holy God, speak to us
what has been told from the beginning,
that your Word is the foundation of the world.
Help us to hear your message in this morning’s scripture lesson
so that we might reach out to many with your good news.
Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD’S PRAYER – Morgan, Dustin, and Dylan

God, as we end the 75th anniversary year of our church, we do so with prayers of thanksgiving for the past, with prayers of excitement for the present, and with prayers of anticipation for the future ministries to which you will call us.

God, we thank you for the good people who followed your call to discipleship and formed Riviera Presbyterian Church and led and shaped a ministry working for justice and equality for all people.  We are grateful that you have called us to care for all of your creation and to be your heart and hands in South Florida demonstrating unconditional love.  We give thanks for the former pastors, the former members, and the saints of this church now resting with you.

God, we pray for our church today. We thank you that you did not abandon us in this pandemic, but called us to stay a community that meets the needs of our congregation, community, and your whole creation.  We thank you for the staff at Riviera, the session, and the many volunteers who follow your call to ministry.  As you have placed us at the epic-center of an environmental crisis, we ask that you guide us as to be good stewards of your creation.  We thank you for all who participate in the Food Pantry Ministry so that we might help the food insecure, the collection of socks for the homeless, and for calling us to not be afraid to voice concerns over issues like gun safety, immigration, and human rights.  We thank you for calling us into a partnership with Francis Tucker Elementary School so that we can make a difference in a young student’s education.  And we thank you for calling us to minister to our selves in creating a caring and loving environment where all can experience the joy of Christian community.

And God, we look forward to the future, confident that you will continue to call us as a people to live an ethic of love as we work to bring about your realm on earth.  So we pray in the manner that Jesus taught us:

For the Lord’s Prayer we appreciate the diverse traditions and backgrounds that make up the Riviera family of faith and encourage you to use whatever words for this prayer are meaningful for you.

Our Creator, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever.

Amen.

please keep your camera on and your mic on mute.

PRAYER OF PREPARATION – Rev. Martha Shiverick

Let us pray.

God, we ask you to be present with us as we meet knowing that you transcend our physical distance from one another. You are not tied to time or space and you part the veil between us as we come together to share your holy meal. We know that we are only a computer or phone screen apart and that through this sacrament we are your body whether physically distanced or together. Amen.

INVITATION TO THE TABLE

At Riviera Church we practice open communion. You need not be a member of Riviera or any church to share in this sacramental meal. Communion is a tactile, sensory experience where we symbolically serve a meal that has been handed down to us from the ancient Hebrews at their Passover Table and adapted by Jesus as he shared his last meal with his disciples. You are invited to participate in this communion in any way that fits your faith journey at this time. Taste the love that we share together even in this time of worshipping online.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

One: The Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.
One: Lift up your hearts!
All: We lift them up to the Lord.
One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

God, we thank you for this holy time, when even though we are separated by space out of our love and respect for each other, we have the ability to come together in other ways. You have called us to be your church, your body, your hands and heart, and although we dearly miss our community, within this virus we realize that you call us to ministry outside our church building in the world you have created.

Through your son Jesus, we have learned the great power of love and forgiveness.
We live using Christ’s life and ministries of caring for others as our model.
With the power of the Holy Spirit we have answered your call and been
your body called Riviera for the past 75 years.
We have been your voice, your hands and your heart working for justice and reconciliation.
We welcome all to our community.

And we thank you that 75 years later, you still call. You send us to befriend the lost,
to serve the poor,
to reconcile our enemies,
and share your message of unconditional love and acceptance to a hurting world.
Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all glory and honor are yours.

Heavenly Creator, we thank you for these gifts of bread and wine which are at my table and also at the tables of our homes. May they be for us a holy and spiritual meal where we feel your presence. May they feed us to continue the ministry of Riviera that others started before us. Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

THE COMMUNION

THE PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Loving and gracious God, from east and west,

from north and south,

you have gathered us at your table, called us your beloved, and fed us.

Transform us to be your body for the world, and fortify us by your Spirit,

so that we may serve you and our neighbors with great joy. Amen.
