MEET DIANE SHOAF, TODAY’S GUEST

We extend a special Welcome Back to today’s Guest Minister, The Rev. Diane Shoaf. Reverend Shoaf, a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA.), has served churches and higher education institutions in South Florida for thirty years. She is active in local interfaith and social justice dialogue and action. Her current ministry of spiritual direction engages others in meaningful conversation, deep listening, reflection, and discernment. Fall 2020 she will pilot an antiracist book club using a group spiritual direction process and seeks other opportunities to combine her love of reading with her commitments to the spiritual journey.

Good Morning!

Even when we’re physically apart, the Holy Spirit unites us as one community! Even when we can’t go to church, we are the church!

CALL TO CONFESSION — Kyle Dettloff

Trusting in God’s love and forgiveness, let us confess our sins before God.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God, we confess that our love for you and for others has not been genuine. We have not held on fast to what is good, and we have lagged in affection for our brothers and sisters. We have not been patient in suffering, nor have we persevered in prayer. We have repaid evil for evil and have failed to live peacefully with all. Forgive us our sin, and help us to trust in the power of your everlasting goodness. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Do not fear, says the Lord, for I have redeemed you.
I have called you by name; you are mine.
God is doing a new thing, now it springs forth!
By the grace of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Amen.

THE RESPONSE

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE — John and Vivian German

In peace, let us pray to God saying,

Merciful God, hear our prayer.

For Riviera Church, its staff and elders and the many volunteers that are helping us stay a community in this pandemic,

Merciful God, hear our prayer.

Arouse the leaders of the church to prophetic witness. Help them to proclaim your justice fearlessly, to embody your righteousness sincerely, and to practice your mercy selflessly.

For the world and its leaders,

Merciful God, hear our prayer.

Uphold the leaders of governments, especially our president, governor, and mayor. Give them sound judgement and merciful hearts, and lead them to do what is right in upholding the common good.

For the good earth,

Merciful God, hear our prayer.

Let earth be a gentle home for us, subdue the violence of the tropical storms and hurricanes, heal the destruction of the wind, that life may flourish and every creature rejoice in the goodness of creation.

For children,

Merciful God, hear our prayer.

Bless children and those who care for them. Defend our children; enable them to thrive in mind and body and grow in wisdom and strength. Give them parents and guardians who are faithful in their duty to provide for their needs and guard them from danger.

Fort those who are grieving, those who are sick, and those who are in distress,

Merciful God, hear our prayer.

Make your presence known through our loving and caring acts as we support others in their need so that no one feels alone or unloved.

These prayers we offer through Christ who also taught us to pray in this manner:

THE LORD’S PRAYER

For the Lord’s Prayer we appreciate the diverse traditions and backgrounds that make up the Riviera family of faith, and encourage you to use whatever words for this prayer are meaningful for you.

Our Creator, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
